monarch butterfly mon"arch but"ter*fly, n. (Zo["o]l.) A very large red and black butterfly ({Danais Plexippus}) having striking orange-brown wings with black veins in a reticulated pattern; -- called also {milkweed butterfly} and {monarch}.
